SUMMARY:2022 Recycle Regatta
DESCRIPTION:Think of the RECYCLE REGATTA like a Pinewood Derby; but with boats! This is a joint parent-racer project. Please feel free to give guidance and minimal assistance\, appropriate to the age of your child. This is a chance for your child to enjoy the spirit of friendly competition with their peers. The object is to have the boats as equal as possible and have the race rely on the participants themselves. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParticipation Rules >>> \n\n\n\nThe competition is open to all Cub Scouts in Newtown\, along with friends and siblings. Each participant may enter one boat in the competition. The boat must have been built during or after July 2022.\n\n\n\nEvent Format >>> \n\n\n\nRaces will be conducted in two to four rain gutters of equal length filled with water.Participants will race against other participants chosen at random. The competition will be run as a double elimination tournament.\n\n\n\nBoat Specifications >>> \n\n\n\nCONSTRUCTION MATERIALS: Boats must be made from trash and/or recycled items. The participants must find items used and discarded in day-to-day activities\, such as items that were going to otherwise be trashed\, or material that was used to make meals or projects. (For example\, new paper for sails shouldn’t be used\, but scrap paper from your recycle bin is A-OK.) Materials such as food\, plastic\, and wood are all acceptable. Tape is ONLY allowed as a joiner material (i.e. sail to mast)\, and NOT as a primary construction material (i.e. it can’t be used as waterproofing\, siding\, etc. No “duct tape” boats allowed.) If you use pieces from toys\, they should be damaged or broken\, not parts from a usable toy. (i.e. no Lego boats or ship models). No items should be purchased to build your boat!SIZE SPECS: The following specs must be adhered to – all finished boats must fit within these parameters.Length – The finished boat must be no longer than 8” max and no shorter than 7”.Width – The finished boat must be less than 3-1/2″ wide. Any outriggers must fit within the overall width of 3-1/2”Depth – The gutters are 3” deep\, so your boat must float and fit accordingly. Trust us\, a boat dragging on the bottom isn’t going to win any races! Keels and daggerboards are acceptable.Mast Height – the mast may not be higher than 7” from the deck\, nor shorter than 5” from the deck. The “deck” is the flat part of the boat\, where the mast is attached. The mast MUST BE perpendicular (90 degrees) to the hull\, angling the mast in any direction is not allowed. Multiple masts on a single boat are allowed.Sails – The sail should also not extend beyond the overall width of 3-1/2” for it may hang up on the rain gutter. It is recommended that the sail should only be attached to the mast by glue\, mechanical fasteners should be avoided and the sail should not be in contact with any part of the boat except the mast. Tape should be avoided as it will lose adhesion when it gets wet.SHIP NAME: BE SURE TO PUT A NAME ON THE BOAT (and the participant’s name). A boat without a name is bad luck – plus\, we need some means of identification for the race. “S.S.” denotes “sailing ship” – other historical or military designations (“U.S.S” or “H.M.S”) are allowed so have fun with it! Once the racing begins the boat may not be altered.\n\n\n\nCompetition >>> \n\n\n\nUpon the participant’s arrival\, they’ll need to register their boat with the race officials. It will be measured and compared against the Construction & Size Specs. The boat will also be submitted to a buoyancy test to see if it floats. (We HIGHLY recommend that you test your craft at home before bringing it to the regatta.)The race begins once the participant has placed the competing boats against the back wall of the gutter and the race official commands the racers to “GO!”On the starter’s command\, the participants will begin racing. Typically participants would blow into the sail to advance them through the water\, but due to COVID-19 each racer will use a fireplace bellows to blow air into the sail of their boat. The boat can only be propelled by blowing into the sail using the fireplace bellows. If a boat capsizes or becomes stuck\, the participant may only correct the issue by blowing using the fireplace bellows (they cannot touch the boat unless instructed by the race official). The first boat to impact the end of the Raingutter with its nose will be considered the winner of that heat. The finish line official will have the final and ONLY say in determining the winner of that heat. If the finish line official determines the race to have finished in a tie\, that heat will be immediately re-run.All decisions by race officials are FINAL. Remember this is a friendly sporting competition.\n\n\n\nRewards and Recognition >>> \n\n\n\nThe Cub Scout Motto is “DO YOUR BEST.” If you “Do your best” designing\, building\, painting\, and racing your boat\, you are already a winner! \n\n\n\nSPORTING CONDUCT and FUN are the main objectives for the participants and all to enjoy. The most important values in Recycle Regatta competition are parent/racer participation\, good sporting conduct\, and learning how to follow rules. \n\n\n\nThere will be six awards total at this event.REDUCE\, REUSE\, AND RECYCLE is a critical objective for this event. There will be awards presented for the three boats with the “most creative use of recycled materials.”Awards will also be presented for the first\, second\, and third-place race finishers.\n\n\n\nWe challenge all participants to be creative and try to find trash that goes fast! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:Spring 2022 Campout
DESCRIPTION:Price\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOverview\n\n\n\nCome join us for our Spring Campout on March 14-15 at Connecticut’s OLDEST State Park: Putnam Park in Redding! \n\n\n\nThis park has tons of history: \n\n\n\nThe state park preserves the site that Major General Israel Putnam chose as the winter encampment for his men in the winter of 1778/1779 during the American Revolutionary War.There are numerous firebacks\, which are the remains of the enlisted soldiers’ chimneys\, as well as reconstructed replicas of the guard house and an officers’ quarters.A 40-foot-tall monument commemorates the commanding officers and men who were stationed there.Natural features found in the park include the rock shelter called Philip’s Cave and large glacial erratics. The Visitor Center features informational kiosks about Putnam’s life\, the encampment\, and the park’s history. The building was reconstructed in 2005\, using much of the material from the original pavilion structure erected in 1893.The museum displays artifacts found at the park as well as donated items. The exhibits demonstrate colonial life and honor the men who were stationed there.\n\n\n\nNo camping experience needed!  Dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday will be provided.   \n\n\n\nSleeping overnight is always optional. We strongly recommend that everyone have a snack before they arrive at the event\, as dinner is served later than most children are used to eating. \n\n\n\nInstructions for Children \n\n\n\nChildren should bring one bag (so it can be easily carried from the parking lot) containing a sleeping bag\, sleeping pad/mat\, small pillow\, and personal care items. A twin sized camping air mattress is acceptable. Please be aware that electrical outlets are not readily available\, so battery operated pumps are preferred. If you have a larger than twin sized air mattress\, you must have a second person on it with you. We suggest that everyone dresses in layers\, suitable for active play and sleep. Changing into pajamas is not recommended due to limited changing area space. If anyone in your group is light sensitive\, we suggest an eye mask\, as there are emergency lights that must remain on in each gallery throughout the night for your safety. \n\n\n\nSleeping areas \n\n\n\nGroups will be assigned by the Aquarium to specific sleeping areas based on age and group size. Sleeping areas will be on either vinyl or carpeted floors. You are welcome to bring a piece of plastic or cloth to use as a barrier between the floor and your sleeping pad or sleeping bag. We cannot promise any group a specific sleeping gallery\, but will take everyone’s requests into consideration. Please make sure your group knows that the animals and other overnight participants need sleep too\, and may not be in their exhibit spaces at night. Also\, you may be assigned to a gallery that does not contain animals. \n\n\n\nCellular phones and other electronics \n\n\n\nPlease be courteous to other campers and leave all cellphones on vibrate. If you need to take an emergency call\, please be mindful of the group and go to a quiet spot away from the activity. After 10 PM and until 7:30 AM\, we ask that all electronic equipment be turned off and stored for the night. \n\n\n\nIn Case of Emergency \n\n\n\nCall the Maritime Aquarium security office at 203-852-0700 X 2250. In case of medical emergency\, Norwalk Hospital is less than 2 miles from The Maritime Aquarium. When a parent is coming to pick up a child in the middle of the night the group leader must be present and must notify the overnight TMA supervisor/staff of the situation prior to the child leaving the property. The group leader/chaperone is responsible of releasing the child to the parent\, not a TMA employee or security. \n\n\n\nThe Gift Shop \n\n\n\nWill be open at 9:45AM the morning after the overnight for participants. \n\n\n\nInclement Weather \n\n\n\nIn case of a severe weather\, we will be in contact with the group leaders. No decision will be made regarding rescheduling until the day of the scheduled event. In the event that the weather makes driving too hazardous\, we will make every effort to reschedule at a later date. No refunds will be issued for inclement weather. \n\n\n\nDo NOT Bring \n\n\n\nCots\, snacks\, gum\, alcoholic beverages\, cigarettes (including e-cigarettes)\, electronic games\, large sums of cash\, or valuables. \n\n\n\nPermission Slip \n\n\n\nThe following permissions slip needs to be signed and presented at the event. \n\n\nView FullscreenSkip to PDF content

SUMMARY:Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary Volunteering
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday December *19th* from 1-3 pm to help this incredible foundation. Every rank has some requirement to participate in a service project in your community and this is a great opportunity to cross that requirement off your list! \n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE:* There are no restroom facilities at the sanctuary* Scouts will be working outside and should dress appropriately* Tools\, NOT gloves\, will be provided \n\n\n\nDirections to the sanctuary: Wasserman Way. To Trades Lane. Follow to end right onto Old Farm Road. Follow past blue shed (dog park will be on the left) around the bend. Cross Bridge and follow road to the top of the hill. Parking will be labeled on the left. \n\n\n\nCreated in memory of one of the 1st grade victims of the tragedy at Sandy Hook School and located in Newtown\, Connecticut\, the Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary® enriches the lives of all beings by promoting compassion and acceptance through programs that honor the human animal bond. Through action\, education\, and stewardship the sanctuary provides haven for companion animals and wildlife\, offers k-6 school curriculum\, free educational community workshops and leads conservation initiatives. To learn more visit: CVHFoundation.org \n\n\n\nThe sanctuary has provided direct support to 400 animals\, over 300\,000 pet food meals for the pets of food insecure families and older adults. Educational programming has reached approximately 40\,000 humans and conservation efforts created over 90\,000 square feet of pollinator habitat. The impact the sanctuary continues to make is\, in part\, because of the 1\,500 volunteers who have shared their time and talent. \n\n\n\nWe will meet at 1:00pm at the pavilion\, share a brief overview of the sanctuary and the projects to be completed. Scouts will divide into two teams led by CVH Animal Sanctuary personnel. Projects will focus on: \n\n\n\n* Habitat Management. Gifted by the state in 2014\, the sanctuary’s 34 acres has undergone a complete transformation: an acre of invasive plant material has been removed and replaced with native plantings\, the creation of a 300 square foot community garden\, a 4-acre meadow restoration and installation of the sanctuary’s 12\,000 square foot pollinator garden.***Scout Project: clearing fallen branches\, cutting back invasive plants\, vines and encroaching limbs and the removal of silt fencing along the sanctuary drive and the sanctuary’s bridle trail. \n\n\n\n* Property Maintenance. The sanctuary is home to a 1920’s bank barn\, once serving as a chicken coop associated with Fairfield Hill State Hospital’s farming program. This barn is now used to store sanctuary property management equipment\, tools\, and supplies.***Scout Project: “sweep” the barn of scraps and debris remaining from 2021 property maintenance projects and assist in the closing the barn for winter.

The boat must have been built during or after July 2021.\n\n\n\nEvent Format >>> \n\n\n\nRaces will be conducted in two to four rain gutters of equal length filled with water.Participants will race against other participants chosen at random. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRace Results\n\n\n\n\nWow; what incredible watercraft! It has 20 rides on its 20 acres. Quassy consists of a full-fledged amusement park plus a waterpark called Splash Away Bay. Swimming in Lake Quassapaug is available. In 1901\, a writer pronounced Lake Quassapaug as “the handsomest bit of natural water on earth”. Today\, beach clubs and houses surround the entire lake. The park is home to the award-winning Wooden Warrior roller coaster\, which opened in 2011.
